DAKSHIN – Global South Centre of Excellence
DAKSHIN - Global South Centre of Excellence emanates from an announcement made by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, during the 1st Voice of Global South Summit in January 2023.
DAKSHIN stands for Development and Knowledge Sharing Initiative. It endeavours to assist relevant stakeholders and partners in the identification and implementation of scalable and sustainable solutions that can transform the economies and societies of countries of Global South.
This is an Indian initiative to mobilise the Global South towards human-centric development, as articulated by Prime Minister Modi during the Voice of Global South Summit.
DAKSHIN will act as an accelerator and multiplier for the Global South towards the realisation of Agenda 2030 and localisation of SDGs. It will amplify
- Cross-continental exchanges of ideas;
- Creation of evidence-based policy frameworks;
- Global Public Goods;
- Transformational opportunities for development cooperation; and
- Encourage peer learning in developing countries emphasising outcome driven collective action.
During the 2nd Voice of Global South Summit (17th November 2023), Prime Minister Modi inaugurated DAKSHIN and proposed an Annual International Conference. This Conference would be coordinated by DAKSHIN with the partner research centres and think tanks of the Global South, whose main goal would be to identify practical solutions for the development related challenges in the Global South that will strengthen our future.
DAKSHIN is hosted at the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), a new Delhi-based autonomous policy research institute.
